If you’ve been to any job fair or skills development conference you’ve probably heard the quote “confidence is key to success”.

You’ve also probably sat there during all these conferences wondering why there’s so much emphasis placed on being confident in yourself and your abilities.

Succeeding in any industry can be a difficult thing, but being confident in yourself and what you have to offer changes everything.

When you believe in yourself and your confidence levels are high, it gives you the extra drive you need to overcome any obstacle because you know you deserve to be there.

Breaking glass ceilings becomes an everyday occurrence.

People will always doubt your skills and abilities, and if you’re aspiring to succeed in an industry flooded with men such as the mining field, for example, you will be heavily criticized.

When you have confidence in yourself and your abilities you’re able to meet that criticism with a smile- take the necessary lessons from it and move on.

I recently read a study about millennial women. One of the key findings of the study was that the reason so many intelligent millennial women aren’t in management positions within a particular industry is that they suffer from a low sense of self and low self-confidence.

This mindset needs to change.

You cannot succeed if you are constantly standing in your own way. Move!

You need to set high goals for yourself and believe that you can achieve them.

Believe in yourself and know that you are just as worthy and even more so than your male counterparts.

Many people argue that the number one skill to succeeding as a woman in a male-dominated industry is to not take things personally.

Although this might not be the top skill, in my opinion, it is definitely a necessity if you do want to get to the top.

When you are easily offended, it clouds your judgement and brings a number of unnecessary emotions and drama into the office.

You don’t want this to happen to you.

Not everything is a personal attack against your character. For the most part, it’s just business.

Successful business women know the difference and when they get to work, they check their insecurities and personal griefs at the door.

That is what makes the difference between women in leadership roles and women who wish to be in leadership roles but never will.

Show your colleagues that you are there to make a name for yourself, get things done and rise above the challenges.

Let them see by the way you carry yourself that you are a strong, capable woman who can handle any pressure the job has to throw at you.

This is one of the key skills employers look for.

To dominate your industry, you need to believe in yourself so much that it influences everything you do and say. Belief has the power to change your inner state and transform your outer world.

When you believe that you have the skills and intelligence necessary to accomplish the tasks you’re given, you will do everything it takes to achieve them.

You will do the research and put in the extra time necessary to perfect those skills that will get you ahead.

Most of the world’s most successful people, (think Oprah Winfrey, Marie Forleo, Steve Jobs), all understand that what you believe has the power to create or destroy.

Self-belief and hard work will always make you successful but limiting belief cripples your progress.

Unwavering belief that you can be successful requires you to have confidence that, regardless of where you are now or what your past was, anything and everything is possible.

The people who struggle with succeeding do so because they are unsure of their ability to accomplish the seemingly impossible. Part of them believes they can while the other half tells them “I’m just not good enough.”

If your limiting beliefs are holding you back it’s time to adopt a new way of thinking.

The strongest factor for success is self-esteem. When you believe that you can do it, and believe you deserve it, you will get it.

Many women in the workplace, when they start their careers, are so focused on doing everything right that they forget to speak up for themselves when needed.

They never vocalize what they want and because of that no-one hears them and they’re left behind.

Men in the office, though, tend to be the opposite. They know what they want, speak up about it and go after it with their entire being.

You need to do the same as a woman. Stop hindering yourself and your progress.

Your ability to ask for what you want and speak up for yourself when necessary is perhaps the most underutilized skill you have.

To be effective in business and in life, you need to sharpen your communications skills.

Be comfortable raising your hands in meetings. Start voicing your opinion because you have something important to say.

If you see a promotion being offered and you want it, apply for it. Make your presence known.

Learn how to speak your mind and share your opinions even when you don’t think they are worthy of being known. If you never ask for what you want, then you will never receive.”

If you are placed in a situation where you feel you are constantly being interrupted, take that opportunity to calmly explain that you are still speaking and give your response.

Never throw a fit but speak boldly, wisely and without fear of judgement.

Staying focused and committed is a skill you need to be successful.

When you start a task or a project, don’t be half-hearted about it and don’t give excuses or rattle off about how difficult it is. Stay focused on your goal and push your way through.

In business, commitment and resilience help you transform intimidating obstacles into solutions and opportunities for growth.

So many times, at my former job, I would be placed in situations where I could have easily given up. Though that would have been the easy way to solve my problems, it would not have been the best way to do so.

Commitment is that turning point in your life when you seize the moment and convert it into an opportunity to write your own destiny.

If I gave up every single time something got hard or a task seemed daunting I wouldn’t be where I am today. I wouldn’t be on my way to building my very own empire.

Success takes work. It takes commitment and resilience to make a difference in an industry that would rather you be on the sidelines.

As you work your way up, remind yourself of the why and don’t sweat the small stuff that might happen.

You know where you want to be and you know exactly how to get there so focus on that.

Goals are your stepping stones to success and a skill you need to be successful. When you commit to achieving a goal that stretches you, you are committing to upgrading your level of success.

Many people, who are consistently unsuccessful, constantly complain that they are never able to get anything done. They complain that life is too difficult and that only a select few can succeed.

But they’re wrong. The real issue lies in their lack of commitment to anything besides themselves.

Successful people know how to set and achieve their goals. They are committed to developing the mindset of a winner and understand that the only thing standing between them and the life they want is them.

Every time you make a commitment to achieve your goals, you are moving one step closer to massive success. You understand that if you don’t achieve your goals then someone else will.

Commit to being successful. Be intentional about achieving your goals and persist until you succeed.
