Our lives are a series of moments that all add up to tell a unique story. These moments and the lessons we learn along the way not only help to shape us into the people we were always meant to be, they are also meant to eliminate the beliefs and mindset that aren’t for our good. It’s important, as we travel along our journey, to keep our eyes and ears peeled for the important life lessons that will come our way. These lessons are key to our personal growth and development, and in this post, I’m going to discuss five of them in greater detail.
“Life is a series of natural and spontaneous changes. Don’t resist them―that only creates sorrow. Let reality be reality. Let things flow naturally forward in whatever way they like.” ―Lao Tzu
What Are 5 Of The Most Important Life Lessons?
1. YOU NEED TO BELIEVE IN YOURSELF
When I was a child, I believed that I could be just about anything I wanted to be. I knew I had the skills and the drive to make things happen. As I grew older, and the more social media influenced my life, the less and less I believed in myself and what I would be able to do with my future.
Believing in yourself is one of the most important life lessons you will ever need to learn. When you believe in yourself and in the power of your dreams, there is absolutely nothing that can hold you back.
Our minds are incredibly powerful instruments and when we harbour negative, limiting beliefs, they hinder our success and keep us bound. Negative beliefs prevent us from going after the things we want, speaking up when we need to and give us permission to live below our heavenly potential.
One thing I have learned, and have had to relearn many times is that belief is truly the ruler of our lives. The level of belief that you have will always directly influence whether you fail or succeed (and if you’re able to get back up after messing up).
No matter what circumstances you face, believing in yourself will always make a difference. It will also mean the difference between moving forward and standing still (or remaining stagnant).
When you believe that you can’t that means you’re listening to external voices that tell you it is impossible when even the word says “I’m possible.”
If you believe in yourself, have dedication, pride and never quit, you will always come out on top. Remember that!
2. YOU DON’T NEED ANYONE’S APPROVAL
Often, as children, we are taught to believe that becoming a great human being means having the approval of other people. That is simply not true.
Owning your life and embracing who you are means having the courage to love yourself regardless of other people’s opinions. People are fickle and as hard as we might try, we will never fully have anyone’s approval, and that is perfectly okay.
As a teen, I was a people pleaser. Every day I got up, no matter how happy I was, if someone made a negative comment about my hairstyle or the clothes I was wearing, my entire day was ruined. I soon realized that true happiness doesn’t need a “yes” from anyone, and this is one important life lesson I carry with me to this day.
The people who are the most successful in life, have no time for outside voices. They don’t care about other people’s opinions because they understand that opinions are not fact, they are simply opinions.
When you spend your life listening to too many outside voices, you have little to no time to really enjoy what life has to offer. God created skies to look at, flowers to smell and yummy food to eat. There is just too much to experience in life to waste your time wondering about what others might think.
One of the harshest lessons learned was this: The need for approval can only negatively impact our lives. It prevents us from doing our best because we fear the worst. If you live for people’s acceptance, you will surely die from their rejection.
3. SELF-DOUBT WILL ALWAYS HOLD YOU BACK
As someone who has struggled with self-doubt for the larger part of her childhood, I can tell you that giving in to fear and doubt will always hold you back. It will hold you back from pursuing your goals, achieving success, and keep you trapped in a prison of your own making.
In order to step into your true purpose and create the life you want, you need to let go of self-doubt permanently.
I call self-doubt “the monkey of destruction” because it can only destroy your dreams; it will never build them. When this monkey rears its ugly head, you need to shut that thing down instantly. Don’t entertain thoughts that will do nothing but bring you down.
God, when He created us, did not give us a spirit of fear. He gave us a spirit of love, power and a strong mind. Doubt, low self-confidence and low self-esteem are nowhere in that gift and they are not of God.
We are stronger than we believe and doubt is a powerful tool that the devil uses to keep us from stepping into our higher calling. But it doesn’t have to be that way. Any life coach will tell you that if you can believe in your worth and hold onto it, self-doubt can never thrive.
Most times it is not the lack of ability but the lack of confidence that prevents us from achieving what we really want. It’s always doable, but self-doubt makes it impossible. This is one of the most powerful life lessons that I will never forget.
4. PROCRASTINATION KILLS DREAMS
I wish I had learned this life lesson sooner than later. No matter how smart you are, and no matter how capable you might think you are, if you procrastinate you will never succeed.
I’ve had the fantastic opportunity to talk to tons of people from varying backgrounds throughout my career. I have spoken to rich people, poor people and everyone in between. The one lesson I learned from speaking to them all is that successful people don’t wait on success to walk through the door, they bang the door down!
Understanding this concept has completely transformed my life. For years, I would wonder why I wasn’t as successful as the “Bill Gates” next door or why I wasn’t being featured in Time Magazine. The answer was simple.
I spent way too much time dreaming and not enough time doing.
Dreaming is amazing but doing is even more fantastic. You need to get off your butt and go make things happen if you want to birth your dreams.
Procrastination will always kill your dreams. Every day when you wake up, you have a choice. You can either do something that will bring you one step closer to succeeding, or you can wait for the right opportunity to come your way.
Each time you make a conscious choice to be productive, you start to realize that your dreams are closer than you think. This is a lesson I’m still learning and it’s one you’re probably learning it too.
Understand that if Oprah, Marshawn Evans-Daniels or Marie Forleo had poor productivity and organization skills, they wouldn’t be the powerful, successful women they are today.
You need to learn to stop making excuses for why you can’t get things done, and start focusing on all the reasons why you need to make it happen.

5. YOU WILL FIND YOUR LIFE PURPOSE
It has taken me about 28 years to discover what it is that I want to do with my life. That means I’ve spent 28 years of my life making mistakes, getting pushed down because of the bad decisions I’ve made, and trying a variety of career paths before stumbling upon the right one.
Take some time to think about what you want to do with your life. Think about the kind of legacy you want to leave behind long after you’re gone.
Once you start yearning for more and begin your journey, you will find your life purpose. I often say that purpose is a funny thing. Purpose stretches you, leads you and moulds you into becoming a better version of yourself, and that’s why we’re often terrified.
We’re afraid that we will never live a life of impact, but we remain stuck because we’re also afraid that our purpose is going to lead us into unmarked territory. As you live and learn, you’ll realize that living a life of purpose is really the only way to live.
If your desire is to truly make a difference in the world, then you will need to step into your God-given purpose. Once that desire is planted inside you, trust that you will find what you’ve been looking for.
If you are meant to teach then find your students, and teach as many people as you can, in whatever field you can and transform as many lives as you can.
YOUR LIFE IS UNPREDICTABLE
It can be scary growing older and feeling more and more pressured to get your life together. Life is such an unpredictable, beautiful mess, yet so many people fail to learn the lessons they need to create greatness from that mess.
The one lesson I’ve come to learn and love is that life gets better the less you try to predict and prepare for every single aspect of it. Though life might be hard, and you might fall, God is always there to guide you if you only ask.
You don’t need to be afraid of all the experiences coming your way if you’re ready to embrace the lessons you will learn. Everything in your life happens for a reason, and it’s up to us to figure out how each lesson, painful or otherwise, fits into the bigger plan God has for our lives.
